Saturday 19th May
I shot up awake at 10 and so showered, had some breakfast and left. I metroed it to Atocha and went straight to the Reina Sofia. It was free for students and I made sure I did the whole thing. I was tried afterwards but seeing Guernica one more time was incredible. I also got to see some Dalí and Lorca so I was very happy. After this, I was a little hungry but I found a shop which had some pastries and bought one. I sat on a bench in the middle and ate it with my cherries. I was happy. I saw the Caixa Forum building and it said free exhibition so I entered. It was brilliant. They had an exhibition of black and white drawings of a prison. There was a video of some of the works and with the music that accompanied it, it was disturbingly brilliant. On another floor there was some Russian Ballet costumes which were marvellous.
I went for some tea and then tackled Prado. It was free and huge. I walked through every room but the three works that stood out were Las Meninas, The Garden of Earthly Delights and all of Goya Negra. It’s been three and a half years since when I left and it was good to see it again. I left and then decided to walk my friend’s house. I didn’t know where he lived but I tried guessing. It started to rain and it was hilarious as some people were treating it like it was acid or something. I got very lost but eventually I found it which was good.
I came in and he wasn’t in. I checked out his laptop and it was unlocked so I checked my messages. He came in with a load of food. Earlier, I had given him a can of mushy peas which we shared and had fish fingers and chips. It was so good. My friend has a resit next week and so I said I would help him come up with a plan for revision. I really hope he does well. I made some Indian Tea which they loved and then we left.
All of us went to a bar to watch a football match. The bar we wanted wasn’t showing it and so we found another. Downstairs, they had a darts machine and a few of us played it whilst the game was starting. We came upstairs and watched the game. I didn’t really know was was happening but it was just nice to relax and get away. I really like my two friends from university and it’s relaxing being in their company. Because the match had drawn, it went on for a few hours and we left just after 11 and I said goodbye to one of my friends. The rest of us, went in search for food and we split up as my friend found a bar he knew. It was packed but about thirty minutes later we had a table. It was quite expensive but I was so hungry I didn’t really care. I felt bad for my friend though as he couldn’t eat his. I had a chicken burger which was so delicious. We left just before 1 and then got the metro back to his. We went straight to sleep. When my friend’s flatmates came in, one tapped me in the face. I woke up but couldn’t be bothered to move.
Friday 18th May
I packed my bags and left one at the hotel as I checked out. I went into the library in La Casa de las Conchas which was really nice. I then decided to pay, reluctantly, for the Universidad de Salamanca. It was worth it. The library was just incredible but it was a shame that one has to look at it through a glass window. I can’t believe there used to be lectures there. I then went for a walk around. First to the market and then by some other roads. It was really nice. I found this bakery in the middle of nowhere which had 1 euro pizzas. I went in and the woman asked if it was to take away ,I said yes but she started to warm it up. It was huge and lovely. I also bought some tea biscuits which I got for my friend. I then went back to the pension to pick up my bag and I sat in Plaza Mayor. Around the outside there are some portraits on the walls. One wall has the kings of Spain and amongst it, there was Franco. I was certainly confused. Other people included Hernan Cortes and the First and Second Republic. I made my way to a park and it was really nice so I decided to write up some blogs on a bench. I enjoyed it and the time passed quickly. I decided to find the train station and when I got there they had a Carrefour. I was trying to figure what to buy my friend to say thank you and eventually I decided on some mini muffins.
The train came and I got on. The person who was supposed to sit next to me, sat everywhere else apart from when he HAD to sit next to me. Anyway, I got on with checking and correcting my essay. It took a lot of time which was good as it meant that the journey passed super quickly. Part way through, the person next to me spoke about my essay and we had a couple of exchanges before we sat back in silence. On time, I arrived in Madrid for real. I got to the metro stop and I was trying to figure out if I should buy a pass or not. It was 12 for a pass or 1,50 separately and so I decided against it. I got to my friend’s metro stop and I didn’t know which exit to take and ended up at the wrong one. I phoned him and they came. I was so happy to see them. I went back to his flat and it was really nice and really clean. I met some of his flatmates and it just felt comfortable catching up.
A friend of my friend was having a curry night and we were invited. We went to the supermarket to get some drinks and then went to their house at about 9.30. They lived in the pent house of the fifth floor of a building without a lift. It was ridiculous. We introduced ourselves and the curry was really nice. I couldn’t eat the rice which was unfortunate. I miss it so much. We played some drinking games (I played with water) and then a few of us left to go to Botellon. We made the last metro and got off at a random place. We couldn’t find the Botellon so we decided to stay at a bench. I had to go and pee and my friend had gone in the street. I tried too but I got major stage fright and gave up. It was so strange. Some people were getting tired and so we caught a taxi home. I was trying to make conversation with the taxi driver but he just told me a really sad story of how he doesn’t make enough money. It was uncomfortable. We got back by 3.30, ate some food (I had the best scrambled eggs ever) and went to bed.
Thursday 17th May
I was so not ready for the 5.45 start. I got up, packed, had breakfast and left. The brilliant thing about living in Nervion is that I’m only ten minutes away from Santa Justa Train Station. I printed off my tickets for Madrid online but I wanted little tickets. I tried introducing the code on the machine but it didn’t work. I had ten minutes before the train left so I headed for the platform. It was surprising that everyone had to have their bags checked and tickets checked twice. I got on and found my seat. I was so impressed. It was clean, spacious and I felt so happy to be finally on it. We started to move and a woman was passing our headphones. A few minutes later an announcement came out and it said that today’s movie would be Footloose. I was really impressed. I wanted to watch the film but I also need to sleep. I tried doing the latter but it didn’t really work.
A couple of hours later, I ARRIVED IN MADRID! I forgot how big Atocha was. I made my way through to the cercanias and I started to remember it. I got a single to Chamartin and attempted to catch the train. I think I missed one and then ended up on the platform and couldn’t figure it out, so I went back up to the main platform and made the next one. I got into Chamartin and remembered the wall with the lights. I made my way to the Departure lounge and got a croissant and some milk before waiting for the platform for the MD to Salamanca to come. It was there waiting which was good as it meant I could get straight onto it. After the train went, the person behind me came over to tell me about the train stops in Salamanca. It was really nice of him. I tried sleeping on the journey but woke up at certain times with drool on my face. A couple of times I bumped into the person next to me but he said not to worry.
Before long I arrived in SALAMANCA! I had a rough bearing of where the Pension was but I wasn’t too sure. I did however manage to find it and buzzed in. I got up and the guy who greeted me was lovely. He showed me a map of Salamanca and the things to do, whilst also talking to me about the UK and what I do. He showed me my room and it was nice. I decided not to sit down and I made my way through the city. I visited La Casa de las Conchas, a house with shells on it and various other buildings. I paid about 4 € to climb the tower of both cathedrals. I was a little reluctant as I don’t like paying to do stuff but I think it was worth it. The views were brilliant and there were some interesting exhibitions inside. Just after leaving, I saw a building about the Guerra Civil. It was free, so I entered. It had some interesting Civil War posters inside. I think I want to do my dissertation on the Law of Historic Memory and in Andalucia you don’t really see anything to do with about the dictatorship so I was really surprised to see a museum on it. I found the Art Deco house and it was really pretty from outside. I had to wait an hour to see it, so I decided to go for a little wander across the river and onto the Roman Bridge. There is a garden based on a Spanish book which was really nice and I took it as the perfect opportunity to phone someone back which turned out good.
I went to the Art Deco house and it was brilliant. I hadn’t really known about Art Deco before apart from on Bargain Hunt but it was fantastic to see the grand variety and just the originality and detail of the work. I was very impressed. I was starting to get tired so I decided to go to the tourist info and then go home. I asked them where the closest supermarket was and bought some stuff. I saw some pasties in the window of one place and I went in to have a look. It cost 1,10 € for a bacon and cheese and I was so happy. I returned to the pension and had a nap as I was so tired. I know I had to go out to see the town at night but after waking up at 20.30, it was still light. I decided to get up and go. I started to walk towards this street I was told about which had some good tapas. I got there but I was in a weird mood where I didn’t really want to eat on my own. I came back towards the centre and visited the Plaza Mayor which at night was just incredible. I can see why it’s the best in Spain. I decided to walk back round to the centre streets and look at the Cathedral at night which was beautiful. On the way back, I was hungry and I found a diner. I was the only one there but I was hungry without many options so I stayed. It felt really strange just being alone. I came back to the pension and fell straight asleep.
Wednesday 16th May
It was a pretty restless night with the heat again but I got over it and made my way to school. The bus driver today was different. He went a different way missing out many stops and so we got to the town in just over 20 minutes which was good as it meant I had time to buy some groceries before school. I didn’t have anything to prepare today so I used the time to photocopy some stuff. I went into my EP2 science class and it was the teacher who had come back from maternity leave. I was a little apprehensive as it was my first class with her but it was ok. The mood of the class was a little off and I could notice a change. After recess, I had EP1 and it wasn’t great. There is one child, who has a lot of problems. He hits and attacks his other class mates and runs away when you try and tell him off. Maleducada was being her normal self and just carried on being attention seeking and making the situation worse. There was a meeting in the afternoon about some stuff which is happening in June so I switched off as it didn’t concern me. On the way back home, we dropped off another colleague and as I was going away, I didn’t have to buy anything so I went straight home.
As I decided not to waste my time with that private lesson, I went to the gym and managed to push myself to 1142 calories in an hour and I did the circuit. I was meeting a friend later as it was her birthday and took the half an hour walk to the river. I met up with some more friends and it was brilliant. The river at night was stunning and after relaxing there, we made our way to Levies. It was perfect as the whole group was there. One friend was talking like it was the end and even though I tried to play it off, it nearly is. I got home just after midnight, I packed my belongings and tried to get a few hours sleep before AVE!
Tuesday 15th May
It was hot again and so I didn’t sleep too well. I woke up and REALLY had to go to the bathroom. Unfortunately my flatmate was there for twenty minutes so I was just trying to walk around and not let it get to me. It was hard. Eventually, he got out and I was gone. I got to school just before ten and saw the English teacher to help her with marking. I did some EP5 exams. Yesterday, I photocopied the piece of paper which had the presentation marks just in case she lost it. A few minutes later, the teacher popped in and asked for my copy because she lost it. I knew it! The EP4 class was cancelled and so I helped the teacher with the rest of the marking. It was horrendous! EP1 was awful. With EP5, we did the presentation prep and some work on the Olympics. I left at two and got back by 3. I ate some food and did some work.
At 5.30, I left for volunteering and saw the other volunteer. I waited until 6.00 and my student hadn’t turned up. We rang him but I couldn’t understand the person who picked up. I left and was frustrated. I knew some friends were going to the cinema so I tried ringing but I think it was too late. I came home and was just upset. I’d started to get annoyed for a few days about certain people. There are some people who have made me feel like my placement in Spain was nothing. There are others who expect me to organise stuff from here. With this Machu Picchu page, there are some who have ignore messages which I think is just rude! My only positive experience was volunteering where I thought I was making an impact but when my student didn’t turn up; I was so angry and frustrated, especially as I don’t have long left here in Seville and I don’t want to waste my time. I got into a fit but then luckily a couple of friends were on skype and talked me round, even if I did scare them. I just tried to not let it get to me anymore. I think this year had changed me and taught me a lot about people.
Sunday 13th May
We had a little lye in and but it didn’t really help as it was so tired. Our friend from uni came to come and catch up with the friend from Valencia. She didn’t have any food so I gave her some flour. We left and the bakery and a fruit market were open so we were all prepared. We had to wait 15 minutes for the bus in the sun and it was hard. We popped to the Casa de la Ciencia and then to Maria Luisa. My friend loved the park. We sat down, tried eating a water melon and then went to Plaza de España. We tried going for a little walk and then got the metro back to Nervion. We ate the sandwiches and I then checked to see if my friend was ready to go. I dropped her off to the bus stop. I can’t believe that was my last guest in Seville. I skyped my sister for a couple of hours and then tried getting to bed.
Monday 14th May
It was really hard to get to sleep and it just felt hot. It took me ages to put my clothes out and shave but I made it to my bus stop on time. When I got into Alcala de Guadaira, I had to buy some fruit and margarine. Lessons with EP2 and EP3 were fine and with EP6 we did the presentation. Some students were awful and only a couple did it well. Between 2 and 3, I sorted out some stuff and helped the English teacher with the computer. We left at 3 and went to Mercadona. I had to get back quickly as I was supposed to have a private lesson at 5.00. I left the flat at 16.15 and got to Macarena at 16.50. The lesson was for the friend of the mother of one of my students. The student told me to ring him when I got to the area and he’d help me. I rang him and he didn’t pick up. I tried 5 times and I didn’t get through. It was 40 degrees, I was hot and so I gave up by 5.30. I came home and I was really unmotivated. I also felt quite upset as I wanted to go to the gym but gave it up for the class. I tried sleeping early but it was really hard to get to bed with the heat.
Saturday 12th May
We got up and it was so hot. We couldn’t really move and we didn’t want to. We did eventually start with breakfast and before long we left to get on the metro and to Plaza de Cuba. We walked across the river and started queuing in the Alcazar. It took about 25 minutes to get in but it wasn’t too bad as we were catching up. My friend loved it. It gleamed in the sun and it was brilliant! We spent a little time here and melted. Before entering the Cathedral, we went to do some souvenir shopping and I bought a fan. My friend loved the cathedral. We climbed up to the top of the Giralda which was so hard in the heat! After this, we went to a bar called Oveja Negra. A friend recommended it to me a few months ago and I’m really happy we went. It had a really nice feel to it. The food was well priced and delicious. The toilets had two sheep on them, one with a moustache and one with lipstick.
After this, we walked through the centre and did a little shopping. There were some silk trousers that I wanted to try from Zara and they didn’t fit unfortunately. I wasn’t going to buy them but I loved them! We then went to Las Setas. We were going to climb them but it was so had that we just sat down. We waited till 5 and my cake place was open. I accidently persuaded my friend to buy a Mojito and we both had cake. I got a Manzanilla tea which I thought was apple but I found out it was camomile. I still enjoyed it. In the place, they were playing a load of Florence tracks so I really loved it! After this, we tried finding the Alameda and I persuaded my friend to walk through the fountain. It was so refreshing.
We bussed it back to Nervion and I went to Pull and Bear to pick up my order. We then popped into the bakery and then went back to the flat. On the stairs, we say my flatmate’s creepy friend and he kept asking me if Rochelle and I were siblings. I was like no but he wasn’t listening as he kept staring at my friend’s breasts. WHAT A PERVE! We relaxed at mine a little and then left at 8.25 to return a top to Pull and Bear and then to Gambrinus. We shared four plates of food and it was sooo good! I loved it. We came back and we were on our own. We sat in the dining room and just relaxed and did karaoke with the aircon! It was brilliant.
